VAN STAPELE

Van Stapele, a small yet legendary bakery tucked away at the Rokin in Amsterdam, is famous for its one-of-a-kind cookie: the Van Stapele cookie. Unlike traditional bakeries that offer a variety of treats, Van Stapele’s focus is entirely on perfecting this singular, mouthwatering creation.

The story of Van Stapele Koekmakerij began on February 6, 2013, when Vera van Stapele, the bakery’s founder, created the cookie in her small kitchen. Immediately enchanted by the unique flavor and texture, she knew she had something special on her hands. Vera’s excitement led her to open the doors of her charming cookie shop just under a year later, on December 1, 2013. Nestled in a quiet corner of Amsterdam, the shop has since become a must-visit destination for both locals and tourists alike.

At Van Stapele Koekmakerij, the cookie experience is just as remarkable as the treat itself. The bakery is known for baking fresh batches all day long, ensuring that even late in the day, the cookies will be as freshly baked as if you were there at opening time. The shop opens daily at 10:00 AM, and the cookies are baked until they run out—often by the end of the day, but you can guarantee availability if you visit before 4:00 PM.

A visit to the shop can sometimes involve a short wait, especially on weekends. On weekdays, the typical waiting time is about 5 to 10 minutes, but it can stretch longer during busier times. For the quickest experience, it’s best to visit between 10:00 AM and 12:00 PM, when the cookies are freshly coming out of the oven.

While Van Stapele’s cookies are free from nuts, the chocolate used in their creation is produced in a facility where nuts are processed, so traces of nuts may be present. The cookies contain the following allergens: egg, lactose, gluten, and soy lecithin. They are not vegan but are vegetarian-friendly, and they are certified both kosher and halal, making them suitable for a wide range of dietary preferences.

The signature Van Stapele cookie is a heavenly combination of dark chocolate dough, filled with a rich, gooey white chocolate center. It’s time for a taste test! The cookie’s edges are crisp, while the inside remains soft, warm, and indulgent, providing the perfect balance of textures and sweetness. It’s really tasty, though I find the price for one cookie a bit expensive (3 EUR a cookie). Nonetheless, I’d give it a solid 8.5/10. I just wish they had more flavors to choose from!

Van Stapele cookies are best enjoyed within 4 days of purchase, though they are so delicious that they are rarely left uneaten for long. To ensure the best flavor and texture, the bakery provides an instruction card with tips on how to store or reheat the cookies. Whether you enjoy them fresh from the oven or slightly warmed at home, each bite is sure to satisfy your sweet cravings.

The Van Stapele cookie is more than just a baked good; it’s a beloved experience that has become an integral part of Amsterdam’s food culture. If you find yourself in the city, a stop at the Van Stapele Koekmakerij is a must. Whether you’re a local or a traveler, the warm, melt-in-your-mouth experience of a freshly baked Van Stapele cookie is sure to leave a lasting impression.
