SAINT-JEAN
If you’ve scrolled through foodies’ social media accounts in Amsterdam lately, you’ve likely seen the iconic treats from bakery Saint-Jean. Open every day, Saint-Jean has become a must-visit spot in the city, especially known for their signature item: the legendary pistachio cruffin. This bustling bakery is renowned not only for its mouthwatering pastries but also for being 100% plant-based, offering rich, flavorful bakes that anyone can enjoy.
Saint-Jean’s pistachio cruffin is nothing short of a sensation. This hybrid pastry combines the flaky layers of a croissant with the structure of a muffin, topped off with a lush pistachio filling that’s both creamy and indulgent. People come from all over just to get a taste, and it’s no surprise that it sells out quickly—especially on weekends. If you’re planning a visit, be sure to get there early to snag one of these famous cruffins before they’re gone!
Beyond the cruffin, Saint-Jean offers a variety of daily bakes, all crafted with care and completely plant-based. From buttery pastries to rich cakes and cookies, their selection is proof that plant-based baking can be just as satisfying as traditional methods. To pair with their treats, Saint-Jean serves specialty coffee that’s carefully brewed to highlight complex flavors, as well as a variety of teas and their own chai concentrate. It’s the perfect spot to cozy up with a pastry and a cup of something warm.
Saint-Jean doesn’t just stop at pastries and drinks. The shop also offers a beautifully curated selection of goods for customers to take home. Browse through their artisan coffee bags, chai concentrate, tea boxes, and even stylish coffee and tea sets. Looking for something extra special? Check out their designer cutlery sets or pick up a magazine to complete your at-home café vibe.
We were so excited to try the famous pistachio cruffin at Saint-Jean and let me tell you, after having one bite, it’s absolutely worth the hype! The pistachio cruffin is a true showstopper, and one of the best pistachio pastries I’ve had in the Netherlands. It’s perfectly crafted with a crunchy, flaky exterior and a soft, tender interior that just melts in your mouth. The pistachio filling is incredibly rich and generously portioned—so much so that it practically overflows with each bite, adding a bit of delightful messiness to the experience.
While it’s deliciously indulgent, the richness can be quite heavy, so it’s ideal to share between two or three people. Overall, it’s an unforgettable treat and a must-try for pistachio lovers. I’d happily give it a 9.5/10!
We also got to try two of their baked knots! On the left is the cinnamon knot with lemon, which was incredibly fresh—it tasted like it had just come out of the oven. The hint of lemon made it especially refreshing and added a bright twist to the classic cinnamon flavor. I’d give it an 8/10!
On the right is the cardamom blueberry knot, which was also surprisingly delicious. The cardamom and blueberry paired well together, creating a unique and tasty combo. I’d rate this one a 7.5/10, as I slightly preferred the lemon knot for its refreshing zest!
Across from Saint-Jean, you’ll also find their sister location, Saint-Jean Deli! This spot expands on Saint-Jean’s delicious offerings with a focus on savory bakes, perfect for those looking for a heartier bite. At Saint-Jean Deli, you can expect a variety of freshly made, plant-based savory pastries, sandwiches, and other deli-style options that complement the original bakery’s sweet selection. It’s an ideal stop for anyone who wants to enjoy a balance of flavors, from indulgent sweets to satisfying savory treats—all with the same commitment to quality and flavor that Saint-Jean is famous for!
Saint-Jean has quickly become a staple of Amsterdam’s plant-based food scene, combining high-quality ingredients with a warm, welcoming atmosphere. If you’re a pastry lover, a coffee connoisseur, or simply curious about plant-based baking, make sure to visit Saint-Jean for a treat that’s worth every bite. Just remember to come early, as this popular spot fills up fast—especially on weekends.
