BUNBUN

Hidden along the iconic Prinsengracht 16 in Amsterdam lies a delightful gem: BunBun, the smallest bakery in the Netherlands. This artisan bakehouse is not just a bakery but a love letter to the art of crafting perfect buns.

At BunBun, the star of the show is the bun—but these aren’t your average buns. They are made from delicate, layered croissant dough, combining the buttery flakiness of a croissant with the satisfying shape and versatility of a bun. Whether you’re in the mood for something sweet or savory, BunBun offers a treat for every craving.

From the moment you step inside, the aroma of freshly baked goods surrounds you. The compact size of the bakery only adds to its charm, creating an intimate atmosphere where you can see the passion and care that goes into every creation.

BunBun was born from the creativity and hard work of Wouter Teunissen and Toon Verplancke, two young friends with a shared dream of bringing a unique bakery experience to life.

Wouter, just 23 years old, has baking in his DNA. His father, a well-known baker and pastry chef in Arnhem, inspired Wouter from a young age. Growing up around dough and ovens, Wouter developed a love for baking that he now channels into every BunBun creation.

Toon, at 24, brings a different kind of expertise. A graduate of a prestigious hotel school with top honors, Toon is passionate about hospitality and creating memorable guest experiences. Having already played a key role in the success of Café Baskèts, Toon now focuses his energy on making BunBun a welcoming and delightful destination for all.

What sets BunBun apart is not just the delicious buns but the unique experience it offers. Nestled in the heart of Amsterdam, the bakery’s small size makes every visit feel personal. It’s a place where you can truly connect with the bakers behind the counter, learn their stories, and see the magic of artisanal baking up close.

Made from buttery, flaky croissant dough, their buns are offered in both sweet and savory varieties, catering to all kinds of cravings.

The Sweet Line-Up
For sweet tooths, BunBun’s menu boasts:

  • Classic Cinnamon Bun
  • Pistachio Bun
  • Cheesecake Bun
  • Apple Crumble Bun
  • Chocolate Bun

The Savory Selections
If you’re in the mood for something savory, they have:

  • Bacon and Cheese Bun
  • Fennel Goat Cheese Bun

They also serve coffee and other drinks, making it the perfect spot for a cozy snack break.

We opted for the Cheesecake Bun—though everything on the menu looked so tempting! Priced at €4.90, this sweet treat is topped with fresh strawberries and a generous sprinkle of cookie crumble.

The bun’s croissant dough is the perfect balance of textures. It’s soft, almost like a tender white bun, but with the signature flakiness and crunch that makes croissant dough so special.

The cheesecake filling was rich and indulgent, though slightly on the liquid side. This creamy texture paired wonderfully with the sweet-tart strawberries and the crispy cookie crumble on top. It’s a delightful combination of flavors and textures that feels both comforting and luxurious.

We’d rate the Cheesecake Bun a solid 8/10! While the filling could be a touch firmer for easier handling, the flavors more than make up for it.

Next time, we’ll definitely be back to try more from their menu.

BunBun is a hidden gem in Amsterdam, offering a delightful twist on traditional buns with their croissant-dough creations. Whether you’re in the mood for something sweet like the Cheesecake Bun or savory like the Bacon and Cheese Bun, there’s something to satisfy every craving. The cozy atmosphere and artisan craftsmanship make it a bakery worth visiting.

Our experience with the Cheesecake Bun left us eager to come back and explore the rest of the menu. If you’re strolling along Prinsengracht, be sure to stop by BunBun for a unique and delicious treat. Trust us—it’s a taste you won’t forget!
